What was the biggest challenge you faced? Melody: Thank you, it is wonderful to be here. So will talk about that a little bit later on. How did you come to offer Skype lessons? Melody: Well, it sort of came to me. They called me and said, we want you to be her teacher. Melody: Some way I guess. So we got started, we gave it a try.
It worked, we were excited and so here we are four years later. I was actually asking the little girl, her name is Hanna. So for her, this is completely normal for piano. Tim: There has never been a chance for the two of you to get together? Melody: Well, I would love to, because her mother and father and I have been friends for a long time. But when you live that far away, it can just be difficult.
Tim: Yeah. She is doing just as well as anyone that I can sit here right beside at the piano. And to me that is so thrilling. It is so exciting to me to get to work with somebody through technology, and be able to bring them to the same level as a student who is right here sitting beside me.
So we do Skype lessons or FaceTime or whatever the families have and it works really well. Now, do you tend to prefer one or either of these and are there other options? What do you recommend? Melody: It really just depends. Skype and FaceTime are the two that I use, depending on what the students has. But I have a few who prefer FaceTime, because they have Apple products.
Sometimes they want to do that. So it really just depends. I have not used Google Hangouts or Ubu or any of those other ones that are available. That street back brickwork and the little shelf, it just looks really, really cool. But FaceTime is just for Apple products, right?
Melody: Right. I do FaceTime lessons on my Mac, I prefer to have a larger screen to look at so that I can see the small details of technique and things like that, versus trying to teach a lesson on an iPhone screen.
That is only about this big. Tim: No, it would have to be a Christmas present or something, really. All right, so if you could nail it down to one thing, what would you say is the biggest advantage of using a service like Skype for piano lessons? Melody: When people ask me that question I usually say, convenience. I am forced to use more descriptive words, more colorful language and metaphors and more precise wording to teach my students things like how to pedal or to end a phrase, or shape phrases.
Whatever it is. One day I was actually teaching my Skype student. She was ready to start pedaling recently. So we worked on that and I…. Melody: Yes. If they have a growth spurt, you see it and you can help them. Melody: So we were working on pedaling and I took her through the series of baby steps, we did some coordination, like tap her hands on her lap to indicate if she was playing a key and to march her feet up and down, to help coordinate the coordination of pressing the key and lifting the pedal at the same time.
After just a few minutes, she got it and I literally saw everything click in her brain. When it happened, she was the happiest little girl in the whole city probably. To her, learning how to use the pedal and make the music, it just made the music sound so beautiful to her, that was just priceless for me. What about the biggest disadvantage? Melody: Well, one of the disadvantages, usually the biggest disadvantage for me is occasionally when we have bad weather.
My Skype connection is just not very good, when we have bad weather. We have these huge summer thunderstorms that just go across the entire Southeastern United States. We were both getting hit with one the day of her lesson, and we ended up having to just completely quit her lesson after five minutes because the connection was so poor. It was just a mess. Because otherwise it becomes really frustrating for everyone.
So we just disconnect and try again another day. So we incorporate it all the time with every student in my studio. Tim: How many students have regular ones or only Skype lessons? Is it just that one girl or just a couple? Melody: Just the one right now. But it was a lot of fun working with that adult on Skype too. Tim: Yeah, yeah. Have you ever taught someone on the other side of the world or in another country online? Tim: Exactly, yeah. Increase your income, increase your hours.
Just a thought. How do you get started? Also, I was going to say one other thing. This is just an idea of things that you can add and for you in fact, even though you teach regularly, you have a great experience with this. It is just an additional service that you offer for most of your students, right.

Writer and educator Ruby Payne has been offering strategies for teaching students in poverty for almost 20 years. Since , when she founded her business, aha! A number of our staffers took aha! Process trainings during their teaching careers, and when a revised edition of Framework came out in , we passed it around the office.
But for the last 10 years, another conversation about Payne has been building among researchers, classroom teachers and education advocates. They question the theories that underpin Framework and raise concerns about the methods espoused by aha! Some of her most vocal critics are Paul C. After reading some of the academic papers critiquing aha! We focused on her introductory offering, A Framework for Understanding Poverty , and we spoke with several educators who have participated in aha!
Process workshops. We also talked with Payne about the questions critics have raised about her work focused on K schools. Many of the practices TT promotes are based on instructional theory that is broadly referred to as culturally responsive pedagogy.
This means we understand that children learn most effectively when educators know and support their unique strengths and validate the multiple aspects of their identities. The resulting practices arise from years of research on effective teaching and learning. Some of the foundational practices include:.
And, because poverty affects so many young people, understanding the causes, effects and multipliers of poverty is critical to culturally responsive pedagogy. We focused our inquiry on the critiques most closely tied to culturally responsive pedagogy—stereotypes and deficit thinking—and on the lack of evidence base, a critical concern when identifying best practices. Each column lists attitudes, actions and beliefs by category: family structure, food, time, money, personality and education, among several others.
Payne describes her approach as cognitive, meaning that it focuses on how the experience of scarcity or plenty, or excess affects thinking. The Hidden Rules, she says, capture the patterns created by these experiences such as perceiving education as abstract because you interact with few highly educated people and serve as a jumping-off point for interventions that disrupt or redirect unproductive patterns help students see education as concretely useful, for example.
She worries that the list of beliefs and behaviors homogenizes a diverse class of people and reinforces common biases that many Americans, including teachers, already hold about people living in poverty. What numerous teachers have basically told me is that the more information you have, the more understanding of the reality of that survival environment, the less judgmental you are.
But school social worker Kayci Rush, who has taken aha! Process workshops and worked with many teachers who have been trained by Payne, observes something very different. It goes on and on. All of this becomes a rationalization for incredible racial bias and reinforcing of white normative values and expectations. Payne chooses not to delve deeply into how class intersects with race, gender or other identities, explaining that Framework was never intended to address those topics.
Another criticism levelled against Payne is that she emphasizes skills and experiences students in poverty allegedly lack, such as language proficiency, cognitive and behavioral skills, and respect for authority. Payne denies that her work relies on deficits. If you grew up in a farming community, you probably may not know how to swim. You know other things. But almost every chapter of Framework unpacks a different life arena e. Framework never takes the next step of transcending—or even examining—those judgments by encouraging teachers to question their biases and seek out the unique resilience and resourcefulness of students and their families.
In the first few editions of Framework , Payne cited a single source to support her claims: observations she made while married to a man who grew up in generational poverty. These observations, she explained, informed the Hidden Rules she developed. Considering the pressure schools are under to implement evidence-based interventions, the absence of a substantial theoretical or empirical framework troubled many educators and scholars.
The edition of Framework does include a substantial reference section and cites research studies that support her assertions about, for example, the number of students living in single-parent households and the ways in which people in poverty discipline their children.
However, the revisions do not indicate a research-to-practice model; instead, she selectively cites research to prop up individual assertions or sections of the book.
The heart of Framework itself remains based on her early personal observations. The Center is not an independent third-party investigator but—as its tax records reveal—a c 3 nonprofit organization established by Payne herself and since disbanded.
The aha! Most show improvements, but offer no evidence of valid comparison groups or effects sizes. Teaching Tolerance retained Dr. Joseph Taylor, an independent program evaluation specialist, to review these materials. His findings? Read his review in its entirety here.
Payne has said that the popularity of her book and workshops is a measure of their quality, a claim that also holds no empirical value. If the aha! Payne has been on the defensive for years now. Framework includes an appendix responding to critics, and her rebuttal boils down to two basic statements: 1 Social justice is not her area of focus or expertise, and 2 the complexity of poverty does not allow Framework to address all of its components in depth.
Humans, she argues, naturally apply rules and patterns, and she has harnessed that tendency to help educators understand why children in poverty struggle to succeed in a world of middle class norms and how they can help. What is so bad about that? And not all of her individual recommendations are bad. But these recommendations are not unique to children in poverty, nor are they unique to Payne.
Thomas points out that focusing exclusively on poverty—or any aspect of identity in isolation—distracts from the skills that teachers need to truly connect with all students, foster equity in schools and engage in culturally responsive practice.

The work of the WWC is conducted under a set of contracts held by several leading firms with expertise in education and research methodology.
To participate, reviewers must become WWC certified. WWC standards are the gold standards of intervention research—but not all research—in education.
The WWC standards were put in place by the U. Department of Education to help policy makers and school district personnel make more informed decisions about education programs by helping them locate the most rigorous intervention research studies available. I started to think that I was not going about working with them in an effective way. The criticisms of her work has helped to assure me that my own methods have not been so "wrong", as Payne suggests. While I agree with her that students in poverty often need to be treated differently due to their circumstances, I don't agree with her that we should be more lenient or forgiving. Doing this does not adequately prepare our students for the harsh world they will be entering after leaving high school.
