I did this on Server , using the following data source configuration:. I had to use LogParser to figure out which parameter is which, and talked about how to do that in these posts:. Using Event Description as criteria for a rule. Now — I realized, since I rebuilt my main Terminal Server with Server , this rule isnt alerting anymore.

I will use Event ID , that part is easy…. Counting down from the top — that is Parameter 9. So my new data source expression for the rule looks like this:. But wait — I need to customize my Alert description! I can get all of that right, and the parameters — right from this event:. Counting down — I can see this is parameter 6, 12, and So I make my alert description look like so:.

Use this method to quickly figure out which parameters you want for your rule criteria, and your alert descriptions. In addition to the easy way to find out parameters in Server — he commented on an even better way to bring rich alert descriptions in… without much work. So for this example — I will create a new rule — which will alert me when someone types a bad password while accessing my Terminal Server:.

To make things worse — because of the way the discoveries are written — they wont show up in the console — so we cannot easily override them to change the frequency! What I have seen, is where they cause constant updates to discovered class instance properties… which add load to the RMS, and fill the ManagedEntityProperty table of the data warehouse.

However — when we go to the console — authoring — Object Discoveries — these discoveries are nowhere to be found! Look at the frequency. This frequency isn't itself a total big deal… as long as the discovery is lightweight and doesn't update many properties of a class with values that change frequently.

Unfortunately that isn't the case. So — what we would like to do — is to change the frequency of these discoveries, so they aren't flooding so often. It will slow down how fast we monitor new IBM systems that come online — but that is a tiny tradeoff for the impact to the management group.

Since we cannot find them in the console — here is a tip given to me by another Microsoft Engineer:. That will launch the Discovery Property… and from there — you can create the override — and Frequency Interval Seconds is exposed. I am setting the second and second discoveries to once every 12 hours seconds and the one main discovery, targeting Windows Computer — to seconds once per day :. Back in MOM …. Then, you could run another reskit tool, MPDiff.

This was great — because we could really get a solid idea of what has changed in a MP update, down to the nuts and bolts. In the current cluster MP, the service monitor for the cluster service will automatically start the cluster service on a node, if it detects it stops. There is a recovery action on the monitor to do just that. As always — if you don't like this intended behavior — you can override just the recovery, and disable it. Because — some service packs for clustered applications, require you to stop the cluster service, in order to apply.

If you stop this service on a node while doing application maintenance, SCOM will restart it, almost immediately. The correct solution — is to use Maintenance Mode in SCOM, which will unload the monitors, and hence, any automatic recoveries will no long run.

Next, I ran a MPDiff to see what's new in this release. First off — there are 62 differences. The rest of this post — I will talk about the most common changes I make in this MP. This will help me to understand the classes, tasks, dependencies, discoveries, rules, monitors, etc….

This allows us to chain together, how the MP works… and will help us troubleshoot if something isn't showing up. Why is this important? First — this MP includes Dell Printer discovery and monitoring. Next up — rules…. CMC, Dell. Lastly on rules — since I decided not to implement the BMCLog executables on my management servers… I disable the two rules that are running on my Management Servers.

Lastly — and probably MOST important …. If they run too frequently, AND collect discovery properties that change often…. This may not sound significant — but it is. A management pack should NOT collect information as a discovery property of a class, if the information will change often.

I am just picking on this one as an example…. For this reason — I like to decrease the frequency of discoveries if this is a known risk. So — using my MPViewer data — I am off to the console — to find these discoveries, and change their frequency from every 6 hours, to every 12 or 24 hours….

This is because they did not define a discovery type. This is required for the Object Discovery to be viewable in the console. I can also use this to disable the discoveries I mentioned above if you elect not to use them.

If you arent running the latest version, you should give serious consideration to getting this tested in your lab environments, and then moved into production. These alerts are NOT the root cause… the root cause is the workflow that gets referenced in the alert. For instance — in R2 — we have a new rule that will temporarily disable a workflow that is flooding alerts. Here is an example of that alert:.

Alert generation was temporarily suspended due to too many alerts A rule has generated 50 alerts in the last 60 seconds. Usually, when a rule generates this many alerts, it is because the rule definition is misconfigured. Please examine the rule for errors.
