Lisa Encinas, 25, of Moreno Valley, holds up one of her drawings. Encinas has Treacher Collins syndrome, a birth condition that left her with malformed facial muscles and bones.

Lisa Encinas, 25, of Moreno Valley loves to draw with pencils and uses pastels to color her art work. Lisa Encinas is happy with her new left ear she got in June after more than 20 surgeries over the past 20 years. Lisa Encinas, 25, of Moreno Valley, has Treacher Collins syndrome, a birth condition that left her with malformed facial muscles and bones.

Lisa Encinas has had many surgeries to treat her Treacher Collins syndrome. Photos are of Lisa at at 15, 5 and 6. She turns her head to show off the results of her recent surgery. The hair cut away from her scalp is just beginning to grow back and the sutured skin around her left ear still looks red and tender. But Encinas is clearly pleased with the work of Dr.

A vein from the back of her head was relocated to provide blood flow to the ear. It has a smooth surface, none of the characteristic looping curves of a normal ear. Those will come in the next four to six months as the skin covering the prosthesis, shrinks to fit its shape. Half of them were failures. A condition called Treacher Collins syndrome left her disfigured at birth. A deficiency in the muscle and bone in her face caused her lower eyelids and cheeks to droop.

She had no palate and her jaw bone was too small. As a result, she had a feeding tube until she was She needed a tracheotomy and still breathes through a stoma — a hole in her throat.

The inherited condition comes from a genetic mutation on the fifth chromosome. It affects males and females alike and there is a chance that an affected parent will pass along the gene, but most cases come from a spontaneous mutation of the gene. About one in 50, babies are born with the condition. Some, such as Encinas, are more affected than others.

Beyond the face and head, those with the syndrome are otherwise normal. She hopes to work as a marriage and family counselor. She also wants to bring more attention to Treacher Collins syndrome, informing the public and, perhaps, encouraging others dealing with the condition. Even after 25 years, the stares, the murmurs and the occasional laughter about her appearance still hurt, she said.

The cruelty saddens her. It cuts into her family as well and sometimes brings her parents to tears. Guillermo, 59, and Maria Elena, 61, admit they were shocked at first when Lisa, the fourth of their five children, was born at Riverside Community Hospital. The couple had no idea what to do or what lay ahead for their daughter.

There was the feeding tube, there was her stoma. The care fell to Maria Elena. When she was 5, doctors screwed a metal apparatus into both sides of her jaw.

Maria was given the daily task of tightening the screws in order to stretch the bone. The family was often frustrated by the doctors treating their daughter. She became particularly angry with one physician who had originally promised them Lisa would look normal after just three surgeries. She confronted him after several failed procedures. One thing her parents refused to do was to keep Lisa from the world.

Guillermo said he and his wife treated her as they did their other four children. We wanted her to be comfortable. It was hard for Lisa. It was hard for us. But we always tell Lisa to be confident. She was holding her while waiting in line at the bank.

Everybody is different. Lisa grew up with her own interests. She writes poetry. And she loves to draw. These days her passion is pastels. She has sketchbooks filled with full-faced images of imagined people. Her state medical insurance no longer covered some surgeries that were deemed cosmetic. She decided to make do with the way things were. She focused on her studies, which had become a struggle of a different kind.

She was in her third year at UCR when she was kicked out of the psychology program. She had twice failed statistics, a required course. The first time she took it, she said, she did not have a sign language interpreter and her hearing aid failed early in the quarter.

The second time, she still had trouble with the concepts. She met with the dean of the college and requested a third shot at the class. He told her no. The dean, she said, was concerned that if she failed again, she would have to switch majors and spend an additional year in college. Better to change now, he told her, and graduate on time.

He encouraged her to try history. She agreed reluctantly. After the first quarter of history, I went back to talk to the dean. She waited over the summer break and was back in his office as soon as fall classes started.

He relented. Psychology was calling me to come back. She also got called back to the operating room. She began searching for doctors in the Los Angeles area. She was referred to Reinisch. He connected her with Look at Us, a nonprofit group that raises money and provides support for those with cranio-facial problems.

Finding the group was a big deal, she said. His daughter, who is older, does not have it. It is raising money through grant applications, corporate partnerships and individual donations, he said. The money goes to purchasing bone-anchored hearing aids — malformed ears and missing middle ears are common with Treacher Collins syndrome — and for surgeries.

Williams has traveled the world, speaking to groups of parents affected by the syndrome. He said he tries to provide advice to them. Through this experience, your child will help you become the person you should have been all along. He also gets stares from strangers. When it happens to you, then you learn. Lisa said she is looking forward to the coming surgery that will give her a right ear to match her new left one. Reinisch said he does about such surgeries each year. Only about 5 percent, he said, are patients who have Treacher Collins syndrome.

Although he performs other cosmetic surgeries, most of his practice is focused on microtia — missing or malformed outer ears. He patented the material he uses in Reinisch said ear constructions are not a common surgery and not many people do them well. He said previous surgeries to create ears for Lisa used cartilage from her rib and the ears were constructed too far forward in order to fit under her hairline, which, like many of those who have Treacher Collins syndrome, is low.

He hopes to help change that. In addition to giving Lisa ears, he plans to implant fat tissue into her cheeks to make them look more normal and to lift the drooping skin beneath her eyes.

Lisa said she is optimistic about the procedures. A new campus will inevitably mean more stares and odd looks. Contact the writer: mmuckenfuss pe. Show Caption. By Kurt Snibbe ksnibbe scng.
