As television shows that are categorized under reality TV become increasingly popular, teens in our society begin to become exposed to sex, drugs and vulgar language at younger and younger ages.

Two of the biggest negative aspects may include the change in their self-esteem and lack of focus on what is important in the real world. As reality TV continues to become widespread, it becomes an easier for teens to become obsessed with the different shows that are easily available for them to watch.

On average, 28 hours of television a week is what a teen will watch over the span of a year, adding up to nearly 15, hours a year which is more than the amount of hours an average teen would attend school Skeen.

Research done by the Girl Scouts Research Institute show that reality TV has an impact on the way young girls value themselves and their view on real life situations. The reality shows that are shown on television depict women idealizing beauty and physical appearance which gives the impression that the value of a woman is based solely off her appearance.

For teens, reality shows can be seen as uplifting and inspiring, giving them the hope that maybe someday their lives could be like the people they see on television. A study analyzed the link between teenage parenthood and found that teens who watched sexually explicit television from simple shows that just talk about a character having sex to shows with soft sex scenes were twice as likely as other teens, who had not watched much of these shows, to have a baby by age The study's conclusion prompted that teens see sexually explicit content and assume that everyone is doing it so there are not any significant consequences to sex.

It is not good for their mental health, for sure. Teenagers are still figuring out who they are. They look to outside resources to help them make choices, like family, friends and the media. With its entertaining dialogue and comical plot lines, reality TV has captured the attention of millions of teens.

Reality stars are human beings, yet American society treats them as idols and want to be like them. Cowden, however, believes reality shows do not have as much of an effect on teenagers, at least no more effect than any other type of television.
