Tina Louise Booth Smith was an adventurous, outgoing woman who was not afraid to do what she set her mind to. Booth, 57, died June 30 due to complications with her cancer, but the disease that had stalked her for the past 10 years never weighed her down, family members said. About five years ago, her daughter, Nicole Langston, convinced Booth to become a marathon runner along with her. Not being one to back down from a challenge, Booth began to train. According to her family, she ran up to 25 miles a week and went on to complete more than 10 half-marathons across Texas and in other states.

A radiation specialist at the M. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston told Booth she was the first patient he had seen who was an active runner during treatment.

Her free-willed spirit and determination to get things done were characteristics that Booth possessed since she was young. Born in Fort Belvoir, Virginia to an Air Force family, she moved from city to city before her father retired and decided to settle in San Antonio. Booth, who was 16 at the time, met her husband, Rick Smith, through the citizens band or CB radio craze of the late s that allowed motorists to talk across short distances from their vehicles. After talking for some time, Booth took it upon herself to finally meet Smith in person and decided to ride Gypsy, her horse, to meet him.

In , after graduating from high school and with some convincing from Smith, they decided to tackle college together at the University of Texas at Austin as a married couple. Portraits and other pieces created by Booth will be on display. The couple and their daughter enjoyed offshore fishing on the Texas Gulf coast. She grew passionate about the activity because it brought her family together and took them into the vast, open ocean.

Whether it was sailfish, wahoo or mahi mahi, the entire family found it hard to stop after the first big catch. What annoyed Booth the most were the big ones that escaped her hook before they were able to learn what it was, Smith said.

Booth was not only innately curious and fascinated by nature, but also by art. Having graduated with a minor in art history, she had a love for painting, which served as her main creative outlet. She learned to paint in middle school, eventually taught summer classes at a craft school and enjoyed creating portraits of her own family and of complete strangers. Before going on a trip to France and Italy, her daughter recalled, Booth spent hours poring over information regarding the various museums that they would be able to visit.

She then spent considerably more hours at the museums themselves. Booth is remembered fondly by her family as an energetic woman who looked at the world around her with great enthusiasm. Read him on our free site , mySA.
